Planning permission for your loft
One of the main concerns home owners have about converting their loft is the planning permission aspect as well as the building regulation guidelines. However we handle all this for our customers which takes a lot of worry out of the building process.
In some instances planning permission may not be required, certainly for velux or roof light conversions and some dormer conversions, it is less likely.
Type of loft conversion.
There are 4 main types of loft conversion: velux (or roof light), dormer, hip to gable and mansard.
Generally a roof light conversion is the cheapest option, the least likely to require planning permission and often the quickest to build. It involves installing velux windows in the roof to allow natural light to enter your new loft space.
A dormer conversion involves an alteration to the roof shape and can create a significant amount of room inside the loft. This is usually chosen if additional head-room is required.
Hip to Gable loft conversions are as the name suggests – changing a hip roof to a gable end in order to increase the loft area and make the conversion worthwhile.
The final type is a Mansard, which involves a complete re-build of the roof shape to create even more living space. This is by far the most expensive and complex type of loft conversion, with planning permission a certainty.
